2017 Open Championship Betting Preview And Tips

Hi guys Donal here from GolfCentralDaily.com with your 2017 Open Championship Betting Preview and Tips in association with Dooks Golf Links. Thank you so much guys for getting involved this week.

We are back at Royal Birkdale for the first time since 2008; I've done the research on the history and the stats, so lets preview the betting and give you some value tips and guys to add to your Fantasy selections.

First up its Favourite Watch and the win only market. As always my own strategy is never to bet win only pre tournament, I always wait until I've seen a couple of rounds before placing a win only bet, trust me the odds never change that much.

Favourite Watch-Win Only Market

Dustin Johnson heads the betting at 9/1 but having followed him closely at the Irish Open I think Jon Rahm is an intriguing betting in the win only market at 12/1.  He has all the shots and his long putting, you would have to think, must be worth shots on the field.  The big question is how his temperament will hold up in the elements and the uncompromising "death by a thousand cuts" test that Royal Birkdale poses.  I would wait until Friday evening to even consider this bet, but after winning twice this year, a Rahm win would come as no surprise.

Doc's Top Five Best Bets At The 2017 Open Championship

Now my Top Five Best Bets At The 2017 Open Championship and as always I'm looking for each way value. We will discuss some long odds shots further down but I think Birkdale will produce a thoroughbred winner, it always does, so maybe the odds a little bit more conservative than normal.

Sergio Garcia 16/1

Before I'm accused of a lazy pick here, Sergio is only fifth in the betting list and represents good each way value at 16/1.  He's T5, T6, T2 in his last three Opens at Troon, St Andrews and Hoylake and since winning The Masters has not been outside the Top-30 in five starts since.  T2 at the BMW International last time out shows he's building again and with that Major chip off his shoulder he's free to fulfil his true destiny; winning a Major on a links.

Henrik Stenson 20/1

The last Open winner in Birkdale was Padraig Harrington in 2008, defending The Claret Jug he won in 2007.  Henrik was T3 at Birkdale nine years ago and will come back to defend largely under the radar with DJ, Spieth, Rory and Rahm getting all the big headlines.  Not the greatest season ever for the Swede but a good T10 in Germany and with links golf under his belt in Dundonald, he will be give value for your money right to the end.

Tommy Fleetwood 20/1

If you do the research (like I try to do!) and look down through the stats of past Opens you will always see the form players of the period filling up the place positions.  Mostly they don’t win but with some bookies paying each way up to six places there's plenty of room for form players to pay out.  Already a winner in Abu Dhabi and Paris, coming fourth at the US Open and rested after a T10 at the Irish Open Tommy fits that bill.  Has yet to make the cut at The Open in three starts, but I'm betting he'll fix that and more this time around!

Adam Scott 25/1

Adam Scott is the forgotten man of this years Open Championship but certainly not by me.  By his own admission his career nowadays is geared solely towards playing and performing in Majors, and if Birkdale has produced great Major Champions in the past, the Australian's name would be a worthy addition.  Top 10 in four of his last five Opens and we all remember the "implosion" in 2012 at Lytham to hand Ernie the title.  The bookies will allude to the mental scarring and missed cut at the US Open for his 25/1 tag, but for me a T6 at The Players, a T9 at The Masters and a wealth of experience says he'll be right in the mix.

Alex Noren 40/1

You always get the sense with Alex Noren that he's battling with every shot and he's a player with lots of miles on the clock who has battled injured to finally display his true form.  Alex not only played in The Open at Birkdale 2008, but was in the third to last group out on Sunday.  A 77 dropped him from 5th to T19th but that's all experience in the bank returning to a venue that has changed little since. 10th at The Players, winner of the flagship BMW PGA Championship showing form in Paris and finding his links feet at Dundonald (defending from Castle Stuart), I expect Alex to be in the mix.

Long Odds Glory Shots

Chris Wood 100/1

Had to withdraw in France due to injury but back in action at Dundonald is Chris Wood. Winner of the silver medal at Birkdale in 2008 as top amateur and a better links player than you think for a big man. Having a great season with a T4 in China and T2 at Nordea before the setback.

Zach Johnson 80/1

Out at 80/1 and not showing his form (yet) on the PGA Tour you just know that as the huge Open Championship field gets mercilessly cut down to size by the course, the weather and the sheer magnitude of the task at hand, that Zach Johnson will be up there, bunting his ball into all the right places and putting himself into contention.  Win at St Andrews included Zach has been top 16 in five of his last six Opens.
