On April 26-27, the Wakeland girls competed in the Region II golf championships with a trip to the state tournament on the line for the top 3 schools. The tournament was held at Rockwall golf and athletic club on the shores of lake Ray Hubbard. The first day of competition brought calm weather perfect for scoring and the girls took advantage of the conditions and were able to calm the nerves enough to get through the first day in a solid second place going into day 2. At the end of round 1, Wakeland was 1 shot ahead of third but a comfortable 12 shots ahead of the fourth place team.
The second day brought much more interesting conditions as the wind kicked up to over 30 mph coming off the lake and really made scoring much more difficult. After 9 holes on day 2, the gap had closed between second and fourth place and it was a dead heat between 3 schools vying for the remaining 2 trips to the state tournament. It took solid play from all of our girls to widen the gap on the inward 9 to give us a comfortable margin to advance. All 5 girls really settled down and played great coming in but they were truly led by the two captains who really played well down the stretch. Katelyn Parker and Avery Watkins both displayed solid nerves and great shot making to ensure that we wouldn't be caught from behind on that day and ensure that our season will get to end with a coveted spot in the state tournament.
The state tournament will be held at Wolfdancer golf club at the Hyatt Lost Pines resort just outside Bastrop, TX. The 5A classifications have held the state tournament here for the last 2 years and it is a great spot in the hill country to play some golf. Good luck to our girls as they compete at State and look to make Wakeland proud.
