Wakeland Golf takes second place at the first annual FISD Fall Cup

Friday and Saturday, November 7&8 the Varsity Wolverine golf team competed in the first annual Frisco ISD Fall cup.  This is a tournament where the top varsity team from all 7 of our FISD high schools are invited to come and compete for a district fall champion team.  The results from the boys team is combined with the results from the girls team to create an overall school total.

The first day was highlighted by Dr. Rick Reedy coming for the honorary starting duties.  Coach Littlejohn and Dr. Reedy each had some words for the golfers before Dr. Reedy teed up and started us off with a bang.

Brielle Ward took home the individual championship in the girls division with a wonderful 2 day score of 71-75.  She finished 4 strokes ahead of her second place follower from Liberty High school.  In addition to Brielle, the rest of the girls team kept their composure on a tough golf course that was water logged from the previous week's rain and fought their way to a second place finish among the seven girls teams in the field.

The boys team struggled on the first day to get any footing and finished the first day in fifth place overall, but came back on the second day to shoot the third best team score of the day to move up the final standings and finish fourth overall on the boys side.  Matthew Whitney once again led our boys team on both days with a score of 84-81 which was only 2 strokes out of finishing for third place individually.  These were not scores he was interested in, but his placing in the tournament let us know that the conditions were tough for the field out there and he did a great job of competing.

Overall, The Wakeland Wolverines golf teams combined to easily take second place in the fall cup and cement their standings as one of the top golf teams in Frisco ISD.  It was fun to be a part of a big tournament involving the other FISD schools and to compete against the schools that we call our rivals.  This being the last tournament of the fall for our teams, we have time to reflect on the fall season and set some goals for the upcoming spring.  Hopefully, when we see these teams at district again in April, we can continue to play well and advance to the regional tournament on both sides.
