Augusta National claims it owns all Green Jackets and states in the lawsuit that "The jacket may not be removed from the Augusta National grounds except during the first year after it is presented. After that first year, the jacket must be stored on Augusta National premises and can only be used on the grounds and during the annual tournament. Augusta National said it owns the jackets, and the champions have “possessory rights” when they’re on Augusta National grounds.
The matter came to a head when the Green Jacket won by Byron Nelson in 1966 recently showed up the Green Jacket Auctions website. The jacket was marked as "present" during a check in 2009 but has since disappeared from the golf course.
With two days left in the auction the leading bid is now $114,874.
The lawsuit claims Green Jacket Auctions is in “wrongful possession” of Nelson's and two other green jackets and does not hold the legal title to any of them.
