It's the week before the British Open and we in Dundonald Links for what looks like being a short game practise session on a compact tricky manufactured links created to capitalise on the well healed tourists appetite for golf in the region.
Rory, Rickie and Adam Scott all make the trip North, but yet again its frustrating that even with $7 million dollars in the pot the European Tour cannot entice more big names. We will have to wait until next week to see the likes of Stenson, Sergio, Spieth, DJ, Rahm and Stenson join the party.
Punters beware as this is one where some of the big British Open protagonists will be trying to sharpen their links game, and others more practising than really trying, but that's always the case here. They will be keeping their powder dry and so should you.
As with the Irish Open, the forecast is set fair this week and it remains to be seen how the course defends itself in the absence of a testing wind.
With Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott all in the field this week defending champion Alex Noren can be got at 20/1 with many bookies and he'll be interesting to watch also next week. The winner of the BMW PGA Championship a couple of months ago, missed the cut at Erin Hills but returned with a solid T10 in France last time out. He's rested ready, has a magical links game, and wont be caught giving a half hearted effort.
I made it my business to follow Ryan Fox on course last week to see for myself how good he was and I was blown away. The son of legendary All Blacks outhalf Grant Fox, Ryan hits it a country mile. I checked his stats and found that he's been in the top-3 in driving distance in his last five events and was T6 in Greens In Regulation in France and T9 GIR in Ireland. Not only that but I think he has the temperament to go ahead and win. Then again they all have. But 80/1 is insulting.
A couple of years ago when they were both in Europe many of us thought that Peter Uihlein would hit the big time before Brooks Koepka but for some reason it didn't pan out like that.
But I was speaking to Justin Parsons last week, who is now working with Peter on his swing and travelling these run of events with him, and he sees very positive signs. After a brilliant solo second in France Peter was T14 at the Irish Open amassing a whopping 13 under on just the par-5's. One good putting week away from a win.
I have to pick one Scot in my five this week, and with my previous banker Marc Warren on a run of missed cuts, I'll go with Richie Ramsay after his brilliant weekend 67, 65 at Portstewart to finish T2. Dundonald is short, tight and tricky and needs to be managed; surely right up Richie's alley and with confidence flowing can contend. T6 last year at Castle Stuart.
I'm going to stick with Rafa one more week even though he missed the cut at Portstewart. I counted five missed putts inside six feet in his first round of -3 there and surely, as meticulous as he is, he'll have worked on his putting since. T4 at The Players and St Jude and hasn't become a bad player overnight. Keep the faith.
There is a tonne of Long Odds Glory about this week. Anthony Wall at 200/1 was T5 in Fairways and T4 in Greens last week on his way to a T20 in Portstewart and he's still arguably the most talented player in the field, if not the most motivated. But when he needs cash he just goes out and wins some. Old school.
Also at 200/1 is Matteo Manassero who has finished T3 and T4 in two of the last three stagings of the Scottish Open. The young Italian was T4 in GIR at the Irish Open and needs a shot in the arm with the putter.

Doc's Top Five To Watch
