Golf Tryout Information - 2017

Tryouts for the 2017-2018 Wakeland golf team will take place on Monday and Tuesday, August 7-8 at either the Trails of Frisco golf club or Frisco Lakes golf course.  More specific details will be given in a few weeks but I wanted to get the dates and other general information out before the summer begins.
Tryouts will take place in the afternoon on both days and will consist of playing 9 holes each day for an 18 hole score.  It will be extremely hot during both days of tryouts so you will need to acclimate your body to the temps as you play this summer.

According to the information that I have, I am expecting a total of around 50 players trying out for our golf team which is usually held to around 25-28 players total (Varsity and JV, Boys and Girls all included).  Because of the expected competition for these spots, I  suggest following these guidelines for scoring in terms of goals to work for over the summer.  These are not strict cutoffs but very reasonable targets based on our experience of incoming golfers.

Boys:
  • Freshmen should be able to consistently break 90 in 18 holes
  • Sophomores should be able to consistently break 85
  • Juniors should be around 80 in an average round
Girls:  I do not have pre-set scoring guidelines for girls.  I am looking for girls that are willing to put forth effort in getting better and show the athleticism that would be expected to be gained through regular practice.  Our girls JV team is a perfect place to work for a year to see if you can develop the skills necessary to compete as a varsity golfer during high school.

Because tryouts only consists of 1 18 hole score, We don't strictly use the score as the cutoff between who makes the team and who doesn't. We will spend some time watching all groups during the tryouts to observe talent levels and use the final score to affirm what we have seen on the course.  Sometimes it can be difficult to show what you can really do on the course especially if you are having a rough day.  I suggest playing in several tournaments over the summer through a variety of outlets (NTPGA junior tour, TJGT, AJGA) so that you can establish a scoring average which can help us as coaches get a better overall view of your talent level.  Returners are required to play in four tournament rounds over the summer before coming back in August and this can be a good baseline for any of the incoming players to use as well although it is not required.

If you would like to tryout for the 2017-2018 Wakeland golf team, please send Coach Hostin an email at hostint@friscoisd.org before July 31st with your name, grade level, and a list of any tournaments you have played in over the summer in order to obtain a tee time for August 7th.  You will also need a completed physical on file with our athletic department before being able to participate in tryouts.  You can bring that physical with you to the tryout or you can turn it in to the Wakeland office anytime before tryouts begin.  I will post tryout tee times to this website on Wednesday, August 2nd in advance of the tryout date.

I will post additional updates to this site throughout the summer and as always, if you have any questions about what to expect or issues with tryouts in general, please don't hesitate to contact me at the email above and I will get back to you ASAP.

Thanks and good luck this summer as you prepare for high school golf.
