Doc's Top Five Best Bets At The St Jude Classic

Brooks Koepka 12/1

Brooks Cupcake. Close enough.

Everyone who does well at the St Jude Classic hits a tonne of greens (except Brian Gay who putts like a God) and Brooks Koepka is that guy.  On the face of it a T31 at Jack's place last week doesn't excite but Brooks was T2 in Greens in Regulation (GIR) which is important. T2 here last year, T3 the year before; he's short odds but a solid shout.

Phil Mickelson 16/1

Phil phones up the school!

Having already announced he's going to skip the US Open because the course is too bloody hard for a guy who drives it crooked (aka his daughter's high school graduation!) this week is Phil's Major.  Recent results have been solid if unspectacular for Lefty whose irons are as good as ever, (top 11 GIR in three of his last four starts) but is just not getting the putts.  Mickelson is however the horse for this course having finished T2 in 2016, T3 in 2015 and T11 in 2014 and T2 again in 2013. Shergar would be happy with that form-line!

Ian Poulter 45/1

Returns to TPC Southwind for the first time since 2014 when he was T6.  That almost million bucks for a T2 at The Players came thanks in large part to some great driving and iron stats for Poults and worth noting too is that he was T2 in GIR at Wentworth even if it was a T40 finish.  Fair price at a fair course event where most will have their eyes on the bigger prize next week.

Francesco Molinari 20/1

Fran's T34 here last year came after a missed cut at The Memorial and the form just wasn't there.  This year he is firing on all cylinders with a T6 at The Players and solo 2nd last time out at the BMW PGA Championship.  Rested and ready, watch out for a big couple of weeks for the mild mannered Italian stallion!

Steve Stricker 50/1

Showed the kids how to do it yet again at the US Open sectional qualifiers on Monday and what was even more impressive was that it was after a Sunday 78 at The Memorial where he fell away.  Never mind that though, Stricks is keeping his game in tune with good performances on the Senior Tour coupled with the odd foray onto the main PGA Tour like a T7 in the Dean and Deluca.  T2 here last year and definitely worth a look for me.

Long Odds Glory Shot

Shawn Stefani is quoted at 125/1 with the bookies with no form and a DQ last time out! But he can play this course. And the week before a Major is the perfect time to strike!
