Wakeland Golf cruises through District Competition

Both the Boys and Girls Golf teams recently competed in the District 13-5A tournament which was held at the Bridges Golf club in Gunter, TX.  After both teams made it to the regional tournament last year, they were eager to build on that success and make sure they made it back there again this year.  The top 2 teams in the district tournament advance to the regional at Rockwall golf and Athletic club.

The boys team was up first and they played on Monday and Tuesday, April 3-4.  The district 13-5A field is strong on the boys side and with only 2 teams advancing from the tournament, the guys really set out from the beginning to make sure they finished at the top.  At the end of the first round of competition, Wakeland was in first place by 16 strokes after shooting a team score of 299.  That first day helped us to settle in and have a comfortable second round in which we shot a score of 306.  The rest of the district competition was in a log jam at second place with four teams within one stroke of being the second team to advance including our Navy team of boys tied for that second spot.  The second day of competition brought some tougher conditions as the wind really picked up and made controlling the golf ball a little more of a challenge.  Again the guys played well and extended their lead on the field and ended up by the close of competition having a 35 stroke margin of victory over second place and securing their third straight District Championship.  Matt Whitney, Drake Kube, and Jackson Tuthill have all been a part of all three of the championships and Luke Whitney has been a major contributor of the last two.  All district first team honors go to Luke Whitney, Drake Kube, Jackson Tuthill and Matt Whitney.  Hudson Hicks from our Navy team took home Second team all district honors as well.

The girls team was up next and played their rounds on April 10-11th.  The first round was cut short due to some inclement weather in the area, so only 9 holes were scored on the first day of competition.  Wakeland shot a team 162 to put us into second place behind a very strong team from Liberty.  There was a group of teams sitting in third place after the first round about 10 strokes behind.  The second round brought better scoring conditions and our girls played well as a team in shooting our second best score of the year to ensure that no one was catching us from behind on this day.  Led by Avery Watkins, Katelyn Parker, and a Career low round from Tatum Lewis, the girls shot a team score of 343 to finish in second place, a comfortable 33 strokes ahead of third place and ensuring a repeat trip to the regional tournament.  Avery Watkins and Tatum Lewis both recieved second team all district honors at the completion of play.
