The Wakeland boys golf team finished the 2015-2016 season in strong fashion by doing something that no other boys golf team in Wakeland history had been able to do, they played as a team in the Texas State Championships. Just getting to the tournament was truly enough, but the guys competed well and had a solid finish in their first trip down there. The tournament was played over two days at Wolfdancer golf club at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort located just outside of Bastrop, TX. The first day saw the guys off to a solid start, but after making the turn to the back nine, they lost a bit of their momentum and finished the day with a score of 319, that had them in seventh place, but just 8 shots out of being on the podium in third place. With that fact in front of them, and the knowledge that they have been a second day team all year, the boys had the intention of clawing their way up into the medal stand by the end of the second day. They did play a little better on that second round, but couldn't keep the big numbers away on several of the holes which was ultimately their downfall in this tournament. Just too many "others" on the scorecards for us to make up any ground on the teams in front of us. The boys shot 317 on the second day and weren't able to pass anyone in front of them, but kept all other teams behind them and finished in a solid 7th place. It wasn't the result we were working for, but it was solid nonetheless. It was a great experience for the guys and gave them a taste of what it means to play in the state championship and what it takes to compete at that level. We look forward to bringing our team back to the state tournament again next year with an eye on getting to that medal stand.
