On the first day of competition, our team struggled to get going in some good scoring conditions but team co-captain, Harrison Hicks carried the team posting a Day 1 best score of 2 under par , 70. He helped us survive the shaky first day of scoring and kept us within one shot of tournament favorite Frisco High. Heading into the second day, the boys were confident about their chances to defend the title and started off very strong. At the turn, we were 2 under par as a team and a full 4 shots ahead of Frisco for the tournament. The guys had a slight hiccup just after the turn as holes 10 and 11 provided a stern test of their focus and ability to persevere when things turned against them. After struggling as a team through that two hole stretch, they turned it back around by accumulating 7 birdies in the last 6 holes to put distance between them and second place.
As we got to the last hole, the only real question to be decided was who would be crowned the individual district champion. Senior Harrison Hicks built himself a lead on the first day by shooting the 2 under par, 70 and he played a strong second round to back that up with a 75. Little did we know that the challenger would come from our own team as Freshman, Luke Whitney followed up his first day 75 with a second day score of 70 to cause a tie for the lead after 36 holes. It was pretty exciting having two wolverines in a playoff for the district championship. In the end, Luke completed a tough two putt on the first playoff hole to win the championship. It was truly a successful week for all the wolverines as they became the first boys golf team in Wakeland History to repeat as District champs.
Up next, the guys head to the region 2 championship at Rockwall golf and Athletic club. We will be facing some very good teams there that all have aspirations of heading down to the state tournament in Austin. Our guys have worked hard this spring and are expecting to be in that group of teams that advances to play for the championship.

The Wakeland boys golf team competed in the District 9-5A golf tournament on Monday 4/4 and Tuesday 4/5 at the Bridges golf club in Gunter, TX. There were many outside of this team who had written off their chances of defending the district title they won last year, but our guys worked hard and kept believing in their ability to get the job done this week.
