The class 5A state golf tournament was held at the Hyatt Lost Pines resort near Bastrop, TX at the Wolf dancer golf club over 2 days on April 27 and 28. Wakeland High school sent one of our golfers, Brielle Ward, to the state meet as an individual and she represented the school well in finishing a strong second place, just one stroke behind the state champion.
Brielle had a very solid two day tournament shooting even par 72 for both days of play. Wolfdancer was not playing easy for the state championship and it showed in the overall scoring from the field. Brielle had the low round of the day on the second day to move up from third place into solo second for the tournament. She played two different styles of golf on the two seperate days while solidifying her spot as an all state performer. The first day was a day built for scoring as there was very little wind and golfers were able to go after pins on the greens. Brielle put on a clinic of hitting greens with her approach shots and ended with a 72 after a birdie on 18 as the sun was going down to leave her 2 shots out of the lead going into the second day. For the second day, the wind picked up and made hitting the greens a little bit more of an issue so she showed everyone how good her short game around the greens is as well. Again she birdied the par 5 18th to shoot 72 and get within one of the overnight leader and keep the suspense up until results were seen.
Overall it was a great experience for Brielle. During her four years at Wakeland, she improved her state standings each year and developed a game that she will take with her to Northern Illinois to play at the division 1 college level. She birdied the last hole that she will play for Wakeland High School and leaves with that as the lasting impression of what she is capable of on the course. Congratulations Brielle, and good luck next year.
