The Wakeland golf team is your District 9-5A boys golf champions. The district tournament was held over two days at two different golf courses for a total of 36 holes played. The first round was held at Westridge golf club on Thursday, April 2nd and the boys got off to a strong start in the first round. At the turn, Wakeland and Frisco High had set themselves apart from the other teams and were in a dead heat for the honors of overnight leaders. By the end of the day, Wakeland had barely edged out the team from Frisco and led the tournament by one stroke. The boys shot a team score of 317. The second team that was competing from Wakeland jumped up and got themselves in to the conversation for district champs as well with a first round score of 322 placing them in third place.
The second round was held at Frisco Lakes golf club and it was here on the west side of Frisco that the boys really started to separate themselves from the competition. On the second day of competition, the boys shot a team score of 314 which was their best of the year and ended up with a comfortable 11 shot win over second place. The second team trailed off a bit, but still finished with a respectable fifth place showing in the district which was a solid accomplishment for these guys. Zac Linkfield led the second team with a wonderful two day score and first team all district honors to advance himself as an individual into the regional tournament in Rockwall. The other members of the team who were honored as first team all district were Matthew Whitney, Drake Kube, and Harrison Hicks.
Up next for the guys team is a trip to the regional tournament in Rockwall at the Rockwall golf and Athletic club scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, April 13-14th.
